Mid-season Report
Posted 07.11.10
MECHANICSBURG, PA - As Lucas Wolfe races through the unofficial halfway point of the 2010 World of Outlaws season, the 23-year-old has found himself knocking loudly on the door, looking to pick-up his first career A-feature win. The native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania has competed in 34 WoO events leading up to the race at Cedar Lake and has managed twelve top-5s including runner-up finishes at Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, OK on April 10th and Eldora Speedway on May 7th. Lucas also led the first 30 laps at Huset’s Speedway on July 1st before ultimately finishing 3rd behind Sammy Swindell and Steve Kinser, arguably the best sprint car drivers of all time. Lucas does have one win in 2010, a non-sanctioned race at Williams Grove Speedway on March 26th, during a break from the tour schedule.
Much of Lucas’s success has stemmed from his strong time trial efforts in 2010. Thirteen times he has earned at least one bonus point for time trialing in the top-5, including four fast-time awards. Lucas set track records in time trials at Houston Raceway Park on March 13th and Junction Motor Speedway on June 25th, making him the only driver to establish two one-lap track records so far in 2010. These strong qualifying runs, paired with quality heat race efforts have allowed the pilot of the Jim and Laura Allebach owned sprinter to run the dash 20 times in 34 races, including 10 of the last 11 events leading up to Cedar Lake.
Not all of Lucas’s good runs have been from the front though. Currently the rising star’s four KSE Hard Charger Awards leaves him tied with Steve Kinser for the most among all WoO drivers in 2010. Twelve top-5s and 20 top-10s have Lucas sitting 7th place in points. His 4406 points are 256 behind point-leader Joey Saldana and only 100 markers behind Jason Sides who currently sits in 5th.
In addition to the early season win at Williams Grove, Lucas notched two top-10s in Austraila in January and two more in All-Star competition at Volusia Speedway, right before the WoO opener at the same track. The first All-Star race was in Lon Carnahan’s City Wide Insulation R19 where he came to the checkers 6th. He then tallied a 4th place result in his return to the familiar orange paint scheme that so many 5w fans became accustomed to during Lucas’s career in Pennsylvania.
Lucas and the team are gearing up for the Kings Royal, Silver Cup and Summer Nationals which are all coming up in the next two weeks. Lucas drives the Allebach Racing, Rick’s Auto Body, Christopher Hall Landscaping number 5w with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
